TRIAL DESIGN
Trial Design A prospective phase II randomised controlled clinical trial of exercise versus standard care following critical illness.
Study Aim To investigate whether a 6 week exercise programme improves physical function in patients discharged from hospital following critical illness compared to standard care.
  Objective 1: To investigate whether a 6 week exercise programme improves physical function, quality of life, exercise capacity, anxiety and depression and self efficacy to exercise in patients discharged from hospital following critical illness.
  Objective 2: To determine the feasibility (safety, practicality and acceptability) of providing a 6 week exercise programme for patients discharged from hospital following critical illness.
  Objective 3: To explore patients’ perceptions of the benefits of the 6 week exercise programme.
  Objective 4: To examine medium term (6 months) effects of the exercise programme.
  Objective 5: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the exercise programme.
